As Singapore faces an ongoing shortage of young talent in sectors like commercial landscaping, stories like Zech’s offer a compelling reminder of how structured support can help unlock individual potential while delivering consistent results for clients.

Zech is a young team member at OCS Singapore who has been working in commercial landscaping services for over three years. Diagnosed with autism, Zech thrives in roles that offer routine, repetition, and structure; and the landscaping team at OCS has created the right conditions for him to succeed.

Each day, Zech prepares tools, clears leaves, waters plants, and maintains garden spaces across commercial and office buildings, including the herb garden that serves as a central point for many tenants. He takes pride in work that may seem simple, but is essential to the long-term upkeep of workplace environments.

I cut the dead leaves at the top. People come and see if everything is nice. That makes me happy.
I must do it within the time zone. Finish before coffee time.

Zech works with precision and care, timing his tasks to finish before designated break periods.

This commitment to routine has become a valuable asset for OCS’s commercial clients, who rely on dependable groundskeeping and garden care.

Supervisors and teammates play a key role in supporting his journey.

Zech listens carefully and completes tasks one after another. He’s hardworking and fits in well with everyone.

Supervisor

The team’s approach is built on clear communication, step-by-step guidance, and collaborative work. Zech also communicates through WhatsApp when face-to-face discussions aren’t possible, showing adaptability in keeping team operations smooth.

Safety and self-awareness are other traits that stand out. Zech avoids heavy lifting to protect his spine and redirects his energy to tasks like weeding and tidying. If tools go missing, he calmly looks for them and ensures everything is put back in order.

“No need to worry,” he says. “Just find again and continue.”

While some of his contributions may go unnoticed in day-to-day operations, Zech’s presence brings stability and attention to detail that enhance the quality of commercial landscaping in Singapore.

“Helping is my favourite part,” he says. “If you can’t do something, never mind. Do other job.”

Zech doesn’t celebrate achievements with grand gestures. Instead, perseverance is his form of pride. “Don’t give up,” he says. “That’s how I celebrate.”

In a sector that often struggles to attract young workers, especially those with different learning or communication needs, Zech’s story stands out. With the right environment and encouragement, he contributes in meaningful, measurable ways to the spaces OCS manages.

For clients who value consistency, cleanliness, and care in their green spaces, that makes all the difference.

Government Initiatives and Regulations

In Singapore, the drive for sustainable retail spaces is fuelled by government regulations, consumer preferences, and advancements in facility management. By 2030, Singapore aims to significantly increase its green initiatives. NParks has already restored 155 hectares of skyrise greenery and is targeting 200 hectares as part of the Singapore Green Plan 2030. The BCA’s Green Mark scheme establishes benchmarks for environmental sustainability in buildings, recognising retail spaces for their energy efficiency, water conservation, and indoor environmental quality. The Skyrise Greenery Incentive Scheme encourages the use of green roofs and vertical greenery, which help mitigate the urban heat island effect and enhance air quality.

Sustainability in retail extends beyond just reducing environmental impact; it also focuses on creating cost-effective spaces that promote the health of occupants. These environments not only improve the shopping experience but also attract eco-conscious customers and foster brand loyalty. In Singapore, sustainable retail solutions are essential due to limited space and pressing environmental issues, as well as the need to address ecological challenges and meet the growing demand for green solutions.

Soft Facilities Management Services

Facility management in Singapore is vital for the transition to sustainable retail spaces. At OCS, we are committed to making a positive impact in our community. In line with this commitment, we are proud to partner with Visio Optical, a reputable spectacles shop in Singapore, to support their spectacles recycling charity program. This initiative aims to provide essential eyewear to individuals in need by collecting both old and new spectacles and sunglasses.

How It Works

Our colleagues came together to donate their old and new eyewear to the program. These donations are then cleaned, refurbished, and prepared for redistribution. Each pair of glasses is carefully inspected to ensure it is in good condition before being given to its new owner. The beneficiaries of this program include elderly people in nursing homes and day-care centres, needy families, and any individual referred to Visio Optical by a registered charitable organisation.

Our Commitment to Sustainability and Community

We believe in the power of collective effort to drive positive change. By participating in this recycling program, we are not only helping individuals gain access to essential eyewear but also promoting environmental sustainability. Recycling spectacles reduces waste and ensures that valuable resources are reused effectively.

OCS Launches Sunflower Lanyard Scheme in partnership with Gatwick Airport https://ocs.com/sg/news/ocs-launches-sunflower-lanyard-scheme-with-gatwick-airport/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 20:34:53 +0000 https://ocs.com/sg/?p=13529 OCS Launches the globally recognised Sunflower Lanyard Scheme for Passengers with restricted mobility.

Now Globally Recognised: Sunflower Lanyard Scheme

The Sunflower Lanyard Scheme, initially launched at Gatwick Airport by OCS Group to assist passengers with hidden disabilities, has been successfully adopted in airports globally. This innovative initiative, which began as a trial over the summer, has significantly enhanced the travel experience for thousands of passengers and their families worldwide with hidden disabilities such as dementia, autism, or hearing loss.

Discreet recognition

Introducing these distinctive lanyards lets travellers discreetly inform airport teams of their need for tailored assistance. The lanyard ensures they receive the proper support throughout their journey, such as extra time for processing information or preparing belongings before security screening. Gatwick’s assistance teams and those at other airports globally have undergone specialised training to recognise and appropriately respond to these lanyards.

This scheme is part of a broader initiative by OCS Group, which provides assistance services at multiple airports, including Gatwick and multiple airports UK & Ireland and Global airports. The initiative was informed by the “Challenging for Change” report, which captured the experiences of passengers with disabilities and suggested improvements. Follow-up workshops facilitated dialogue and idea exchange among airlines, airport operators, baggage handlers, disability groups, and support service providers.

Charity Partnership & Collaboration

Key UK charities like the Alzheimer’s Society, The National Autistic Society, and Action on Hearing Loss have collaborated with Gatwick Airport and OCS Group in this endeavour. At launch, Nikki Barton, Head of Terminals and Passenger Assistance at Gatwick, highlighted the scheme’s role in reducing travel stress for passengers with hidden disabilities and the importance of training for frontline teams in enhancing passenger experiences.

OCS Group has 60 years of expertise in the aviation sector and their commitment to excellence for passengers needing additional assistance. The lanyard scheme, born from extensive consultations with disability groups, aims to minimise misinterpretations of the specific needs associated with hidden disabilities.

Specialist Colleague Training

OCS has provided persons with reduced mobility (PRM) services at Gatwick since November 2010. The lanyard scheme’s rollout was supported by comprehensive training, with NVQ Level 2 training in dementia care now standard for OCS teams in the departure lounges. Numerous Dementia Friends Champions have been trained across the airports to further the Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme.

Sue Rennie, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager for West Sussex North, said, “People with dementia and their family carers often find travelling daunting when faced with unfamiliar and busy airports. The lanyard scheme for passengers with hidden disabilities introduced at Gatwick offers reassurance to those who use it. It also helps airport teams know that they may require additional support, which can improve the passengers’ travel experience at the airport.”
